Yesterday, while I was making some adjustments and checking some functions, I had her running on the muffs. She would shift fine from forward and back through neutral to reverse just fine BUT in reverse, as soon as I tried to come off idle (in gear), the engine would promptly die, just as if I had shut the key off. No such problem in forward. I did find, though, that by pressing the shift bypass button, it would stay running in reverse. I checked my manual schematics and show nothing specific to reverse. Ran out of time but I wanted to check and see if I lost coil voltage when she dies but didn't get that far. Any other ideas that I might look into?
Any help appreciated as always!!Regards,Rich. Ahhh, I found it in the engine manual and on the boat. No mention in the Merc manual about adjustments but the Clymer manual has one short paragraph which says 'On Alpha One, move the remote control handle to the full reverse position and check the shift cutout switch roller position on the shift plate. The roller should be centered.' And they show an illustration showing that roller to be insome kind of a detent position. So my next question is just what is the purpose of this switch? Chief Plasma said something about 'unloading the gears'?
What is that? And I DO see that it is connected to the coil so this is most likely my culprit! Not sure why reel Poor thinks it would not come into play.

IMHO.The water has nothing to do with the switch.-cpbecause as usual Reel Poor hit it right on the head.I haven't seen a post made by him that wasn't spot on.and the water has a MAJOR impact on the function of the lower shift cable and interrupt switch. When running on muffs, there is no water resistance against the prop putting a load on the cable or switch. Same is true if you run your drive in a barrel of water, still not enough resistance, the water just splashes around instead of trying to move the boat.wncrjb. What is that? And I DO see that it is connected to the coil so this is most likely my culprit!IMHO, the mercruiser manual is a better choice than the clymers, the right mercruiser manual for YOUR application will walk you through, in detail, anything you get yourself into. And the purpose of the interrupt switch is to help shift OUT of a gear, being forward or reverse. The gears in the lower drive are designed to mesh tighter as load is applied to them, which would make it hard to shift out of that gear. What the interrupt switch does is as you move the shifter out of a gear towards neutral, it will momentarily kill the ignition circuit releasing the pressure applied on the gears so you can move the shifter easily. The momentary 'kill' won't even be noticed by the operator if everything is adjusted and tuned right.Hope this helps.wncrjb. Not sure why reel Poor thinks it would not come into play. IMHO.The water has nothing to do with the switch. But I need some of dat ed-u-mication too.-cpIt does not come into play because when the prop is NOT in the water there is NO load on the prop, soooo.
If there is no load on the prop there can be no load on the gears. With no load on the gears the dog clutch will slide freely. If the dog clutch slides freely there is no tension placed on the shift cable when shifting. With no tension on the cable the switch will not be activated.I hope that clears it up for ya Chief.
Got some ed-u-ma-cation for the day. That makes perfect sense. I though you meant there was water up there by the switch. HA!I usually put mine in a big blue tote full of water with the muffs on to give a bit of load to the prop. When exercising / lubing that cable. The kill works going into and out of neutral though. My engine manual specifically said to shift faster in and out of gear. (Not to say Neutral to 100% throttle just into gear) If I go to slow the momentary kill gets to long for the motor at idle and dies.Plus it grinds more which is probably harder on my nerves than the gears.
